Known as a fashion symbol and statement amongst rich gentlemen through the late 1500s and early 1600s. It was made for both show and also to protect the sword-wielding hand during duels. It was eventually adapted as part of a gentleman’s education, and it later was adapted into other styles of swords, such as the basket-hilted broadsword.
